Glow guide

How long does a spray tan last?

The short answer: 7 to 10 days. The longer answer is the difference between a tan that fades patchy on day four and one that still looks lit on day ten. After twenty-two years of tanning Columbus, here's exactly how we help our clients get every hour of glow out of a single session.

The 7–10 day timeline

A custom airbrush tan is built on DHA, a plant-derived sugar that reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin. That layer sheds on its own every 7–10 days, which is why even a perfect tan has a natural expiration date. Your job is to slow the shed, not stop it.

  • Hours 0–2: the bronzer guide color is on. Stay dry, wear loose dark clothing, skip the gym.
  • Hours 2–10: DHA is developing. No water, no sweat, no lotion.
  • Day 1–3: peak color. Rinse in warm water only for the first shower; sulfate-free body wash after that.
  • Day 4–7: the sweet spot. Moisturize morning and night — dry skin fades a tan faster than water does.
  • Day 8–10: gradual fade. This is when a gradual self-tanner (we carry Norvell) blends the last of the color into your next appointment.

Prep like a pro

Ninety percent of tan longevity is decided before you ever walk into the studio. Twenty-four hours out: shave, exfoliate with a pH-balanced scrub, and skip lotion on tan day. Day-of: no deodorant, no perfume, no makeup on areas that will be sprayed. That's it.

The five habits that stretch a tan

  1. Moisturize twice a day with a hydrating, oil-free lotion.
  2. Shower in warm — not hot — water and keep it under ten minutes.
  3. Pat dry with a soft towel. Never rub.
  4. Skip chlorine pools, hot tubs, and long saltwater swims.
  5. Avoid retinol, AHAs, benzoyl peroxide, and physical scrubs on tanned skin.

Frequently asked

How long does a spray tan last?

A professional custom spray tan lasts 7 to 10 days on average. The color develops fully in 8–24 hours and then fades gradually as your skin naturally exfoliates. With good prep and daily moisturizing, most of our Sun Studio Tan clients stretch a tan to the full 10 days — and often longer with a rinse-and-refresh in between.

What makes a spray tan fade faster?

Chlorine, long hot showers, harsh soaps, exfoliating scrubs, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, shaving with dull razors, and anything that dries your skin. Sweat sessions and saunas within the first 8 hours are the biggest culprits.

Can I shower after a spray tan?

Yes — after your rinse window. With our standard tan, wait 8–10 hours before your first rinse (just warm water, no soap). If you booked the 2-Hour Rinse add-on, you'll rinse at the 2-hour mark instead. After the first rinse, use a sulfate-free body wash and pat dry.

How often should I get a spray tan?

Most clients rebook every 7–10 days. If you tan weekly, our Bronzed membership makes it the best value in Columbus. For events, book 1–2 days before so the color has time to settle into its true tone.
